Playing Sports put Cate on the Road to Business Success

catefra.jpg (5169 bytes)Playing athletics as a youth in Henry County helped prepare Frank Cate for competition in the business world as a computer program analyst and a sales director.

It also paved the way for Cate's induction to the Paris-Henry County Sports Hall of Fame.

Cate was a three year starter in basketball at Grove High School and played American Legion Baseball for 4 years.

He received an athletic scholarship from Northeast Mississippi Junior College in Booneville to play baseball and basketball when he graduated from Grove in 1954.

After a year in Booneville, he transferor to Carson-Newman college in Jefferson City where he was a three-year starter in both baseball and basketball.

In baseball, he was chosen All-Volunteer Conference twice and posted a 19-4 record as a starting pitcher. He averaged 15 points a game in basketball and was voted All-Conference once.

After college, Cate taught public school in Chattanooga from 1958-61 and coached two sports.

He moved on to sell insurance for two years in Chattanooga before becoming a computer programming analyst at Brown Construction Company in Huntsville, Alabama, from 1963-64.

He joined the NCR Corporation in 1964 and worked in various capacities for the company around the country until 1989. His jobs included positions as district, regional and federal sales manager.

His work carried him to Los Angeles in 1987 where he worked as NCR's district sales manager for two years.

He left NCR in 1987 to join Property Valuation Associates in Santa Anna, California, where he still works. He also owns and operates a property tax consulting business.

Cate is married to the former Laura Batzer. They have two children, Lori and Phil, and three grandchildren.
