Hall of Fame honors dozen student-athletes

the Paris-Henry County Sports Hall of Fame’s proudest traditions is the
honoring of Henry County student athletes.
A male and female student athlete from each of the school’s that sponsor
sports teams in the Henry County School System and Paris Special School
District will receive the Hall of Fame’s student honors at a banquet set at
6:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Paris Convention Center on East Wood Street.
Receiving the student awards and their schools are: Marsalis Teague and
Jasmine Porter, Henry County High School; Andrew Jelks and Cher’ron Teague,
Grove School; Khalil Kendley and Justice Birmingham, Inman Middle School;
Justin Stubblefield and Savannah Rose, Harrelson School; Allison Scott and
Trey Cowans, Henry School; and Jacob Scarbrough and Bridgett Stahl, Lakewood
School.
The Hall of Fame will be inducting five new members at the banquet. The 2009
inductees are Paula Carter Bell, Billy Lee Howard Jr., Chris Hudgins, Lance
Smith and the late Dan Robison. The late Bill Davis will be honored with the
Distinguished Service Award.
Henry County High School football coach Joe Gaddis is the guest speaker.
The following is a look at each of the student-athletes’ accomplishments.
Henry County High School
Marsalis Teague — Teague as quarterback took the Patriot football team to
an undefeated regular season and into the semifinals of the state playoffs
for the third straight season. Teague was the Lions Club’s Player of the
Year and named the Mr. Football Class 4A Back of the Year. He was on
numerous All-Star teams while being named the District 7-4A Most Valuable
Player.
He was highly recruited nationally by some of the biggest names in college
football before accepting a scholarship to the University of Tennessee.
Off the field, Teague carries a 4.0 grade point average. He is a member of
several school clubs, including the National Honor Society. He is the son of
Lola Williams and Lawrence Teague both of Paris.
Jasmine Porter — Porter is a three-sport stalwart at HCHS. She
starts in basketball, softball and volleyball. A two-time member of the
All-District 10-AAA basketball team, Porter was also selected to the
All-District volleyball team this year.
She is the student council project chair and a member of the National Honor
Society. She is active in several clubs at HCHS and also is the youth NAACP
president for the local chapter.
She is the daughter of Richard and Helga Porter of Paris.
Grove
Andrew Jelks — Jelks played freshmen basketball and football at Grove. He
also saw varsity action in both sports at HCHS.
He not only excels in sports but also in the classroom where he has
maintained an A average in every class this school year. Teachers call him
friendly, reliable and very willing to help other students.
He is the son of Bill and Debbie Jelks of Paris.
Cher’ron Teague — As a freshman, Teague competed on the varsity basketball
and volleyball teams at HCHS where coaches talk about her desire and work
ethic. She won the Most Improved Player award at the HCHS basketball
banquet.
She keeps up strong games despite the rigors of playing two sports. Teachers
commend her for work ethic in the classroom.
Inman
Khalil Kendley — Kendley was a big contributor offensively and defensively
to the Inman football team that won the West Tennessee championship this
season. He was named the Defensive Most Valuable Player in the semifinals of
the playoffs.
He also was a member of the Bulldogs basketball team that won the West
Tennessee championship this spring. Inman is the first school to hold both
championships in the same year.
Kendley is also a solid student at Inman. He is the son of Tara Littleton.
Justice Birmingham — Birmingham plays softball and is a cheerleader
at Inman. She also plays travel softball when the school team is not
playing.
She is a member of Beta, Watchdogs, Inman Chorus and the yearbook staff. She
is the daughter of Tony and Dana Birmingham of Paris.
Harrelson
Justin Stubblefield — Stubblefield has always enjoyed playing
sports. He currently plays football and basketball at Harrelson. He plays
baseball in the summer. He was chosen to the All-River Conference football
team.
Hailed a leader on and off the field at Harrelson, Stubblefield does well
academically. He is the son of Benny Stubblefield and the late Rhonda
Stubblefield. He has one sister, Janna.
Savannah Rose — Rose has played basketball, soccer and softball for
the past three years at Harrelson. She was chosen All-Conference in softball
and basketball. She was a member of the All-Tournament team in basketball
this season.
An honor roll student, Rose is president of the school’s Leo Club and 4-H
clubs. She is active in several other school and church programs. She is the
daughter of Todd and Teresa Rose.
Henry
Trey Cowans — Cowans plays basketball, football and soccer at Henry
School. He was chosen to the All-River Conference tournament team this year.
An active baseball player in the summer, he has graduated from Pop Warner
football and the Paris-Henry County Basketball League.
He won the Most Athletic superlative at Henry. Cowans is the son of Crystal
King and Terrell Cowans
Allison Scott — Scott plays both basketball and softball at Henry.
She has been playing softball since she was 5 and played on a state
championship team as an 8 year old.
She started playing basketball at age 9 and spends much time practicing both
sports.
She works hard to maintain high grades and has competed on Henry’s Academic
Team. She is a member of the Beta Club. Her teachers and coaches commend her
for her dedication, hard work and willingness to learn.
Scott is the daughter of Brian and Sarah Scott and Nikki Hoffman.
Lakewood
Jacob Scarbrough — Scarbrough’s sports interest began with karate lessons
at age 4. He picked up soccer and later would add football at Lakewood.
He was a starting linebacker at Lakewood and made the All-Conference team in
football. He is a co-captain of the Eagles’ soccer team.
He attends summer camp each year and was named “Mr. TCC” of the Teenage
Christian Camp in East Tennessee for two years.
He is the son of Jason and Britannie Scarbrough.
Bridgett Stahl — Stahl has been a three-year performer on Lakewood’s
basketball, soccer and softball teams. She has twice been honored as an
All-Conference softball player.
She has been involved in numerous sports activities outside of school. In
addition to recreational and travel teams in softball and soccer, she has
studied gymnastics and was a Pop Warner football cheerleader.
Stahl is the daughter of John and Jauiece Stahl.
