Class History

AS WE OF THE CLASS OF '35 look back over four years in Grove, it seems
that their history is one of success, similar, yet different, from past histories. Since 1906 freshmen have trudged up the hill, meeting problems and striving to overcome them. We feel that we have met similar problems, but the success of our attempts, because it is ours, seems greater than those of others.

The glory that is ours was not long in coming to light. As freshmen we won over all classes in the Interclass Basketball Tournament. With other victories we soon became sophomores, then. juniors, and, more quickly than seemed possible, seniors. Now we are at the top. We are ready to leave high school and pursue the occupations we have chosen. Together, we have made our high school course successful; divided, may each of us make his future worth while.

All activities have called us. We have excelled in athletics, scholarship, literary activities, and all extracurricular activities of the school.

Our valedictorian, Mary Evelyn Farrar, has won the undergraduate medal two years. Several members of the class have shown a high mental capacity and will doubtless continue to go forward in scholastic fields.

In footbail the green and gold has bravely carried the blue and white to many victories. Charles Neese has made three letters in football; Jesse Turner was named West Tennessee center and has made two letters, and his name was placed on the Fiske Trophy this year; Winston Pillow, J. P. German, John Robert Pulley, Joe Gilbert, Arthur Morris, and Edward Atkins each made a letter. Our senior year Margaret Ellen Peebles was crowned football queen.

Fay Wiggins, Laurine Pierce, Margaret Ray, and Mildred Burnette have represented our class in basketball for four years.

In our freshman year John Robert Pulley, Jimmie McCall and Frank Garland won recognition in the Murray State Teachers College Track and Field Meet at Murray, Kentucky, in which Grove won second place. In our sophomore and junior years Grove placed first in the Henry County Track and Field Meet here, in which the senior class was ably represented by Robert Lee, John Robert Pulley, Jimmie McCall, Winston Pillow, Frank Garland, and Robert Baxter.

Those who have excelled in dramatics have well represented the class of '35. In our sophomore year Elroy Scruggs won first prize for dramatic reading in the Interclass Contest. The results of the next year's contest showed further progress in dramatics when R. G. Burch won first prize in oratory and Virginia Harris won second prize in dramatic reading. Our senior year saw the pinnacle of our fame when both first prizes went to senior representatives, Margaret Ellen Peebles and Charles Neese.

Eight seniors have represented Grove in the West Tennessee Literary Meet at Martin, Tennessee, and many have gone to the state contests at Knoxville.

Mr. W. J. Smith was principal of Grove for our first three years and when Mr Terry Fitch took his place our last year, we continued to give the school solid backing Through the business ability of our presidents: R. G Burch, Jimmie Martin, Crawford Aden, and Charles Neese, we have reached higher fame. We sponsored the first amateur night. We introduced a school magazine "The Grove Hillbily and contributed useful material to the school paper, "The Comet." Tom Flake has demonstrated journalistic ability by his work on a daily paper. We will have the distinction of being the first class in Grove to be graduated in caps and gowns.

Thus we have spent our four years in high school, and we trust that we will go on working and achieving. May we look toward the future seriously and earnestly keeping in mind our motto, "In ourselves our future lies, and molding ourselves that the future will be as worth while as our days in high school.
