Buddy,
This is one story I am most familiar with. I was first
row, first seat and I was the one who had to go to Mrs. Outland's class in the old gym
building and get the paddle and face all the catcalls and haha's from the Seniors. Talk
about embarrassment!
It wasn't that everyone refused to do the assignment, it was just one of those times that
the information Mr. Brewer wanted was hard to find. I know I went to several neighbors for
help and finally ended up tearing some pages out of some magazines and brought them to
class. Whenever Mr. Brewer asked for the homework, I timidly held up my torn out pages. As
I remember, I was the only one to have brought anything to class. Marilee Tayloe was the
only girl in the class and maybe she had brought something. She was on the far side of the
room and I was too scared to look at anyone. She'll have to read this and verify. Anyway,
she didn't get a whuppin'.
After Mr. Brewer discovered that nearly the whole class had "defied" him, he
sent me to get the paddle. When I returned from my trip, he asked, "who's
first?" Shoot, I just sat there. I wasn't aware what the criteria was to be first.
Jimmy Vincent was sitting behind me, first row, second seat. After what seemed like an
eternity, Jimmy arose, I'll never forget his face, and said "I guess it's me!"
Whew, talk about relief!! Jimmy, being first, got the worst of anyone. Mr. Brewer was
fresh and that paddle went back, hit the blackboard five times and then Jimmy five times.
Everyone got five strokes. I honestly believe Mr. Brewer was about worn out by the time he
finished.
I sat, saw and sweated through 19 whuppin's. I just knew he was going to end up with me.
As I remember it, only Marilee and I escaped, but Bobby Louie has come forward and says he
didn't get it either.
Mr. Brewer has told several of us at different times through the years that in all his
years of teaching he had never done anything that got him so much notoriety.

Buddy,
You can add my name to that list. I also believe Rex was
in there. My desk was about the second or third row, very last by
the window. I recall how painful it was walking back to my seat. I can tell you, I took my
time. I still don't recall doing much
homework even after the WHUPPIN.
Don
P.S. Mr. Brewer (coach) is a good man. He should have
given me a few more "lickins".

JAMES DICKIE VAUGHN
Hey Buddy,
Dick Vaughn here, just remembered 2 weeks before graduation in 1953, I was
in the basement rest room smoking
and Mr. (Coach) Williams came down and caught me, marched me up to Dwight
Norman's office for discipline and He
told me 2 weeks suspension or 15 licks with that same paddle used on you guys in
the whuppin'
I had no choice did I? Bend over and grab your ankles, and he drove me into the
wall 15 times and it was hard to
sit down afterward. Enjoyed you guys stories and will look forward to seeing you
this month!
Dick

I was one of the happy ones who was in that
class that fateful day. However, I happened to have my homework but did
not volunteer to take a whooping. I did, however, get acquainted with Mr.
Brewer's paddle later in the year. I
never did regret having not volunteered to join the party. I remember only five
swats, but my memory has never been the
same since getting acquainted with the paddle.

I still do not know how I got out of that but this is one group I missed so I am going to keep it that way.
