James Egar Phelps ~ Obituary

Retired Holley carburetor plant worker James Edgar Phelps, 92, of Paris died Thursday, March 28, 2013, at Henry County Medical Center.

His wife, Edna E. Throgmorton Phelps, survives. They were married on May 21, 1944.

His funeral will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Ridgeway Funeral Home.

Trent Bullock will officiate. Burial will be in Memorial Cemetery.

Chosen as pallbearers are Carson Phelps Garthright, Brian Cathey, John Thomas Rose, Charlie Rose, Troy Bruce, John Dale French and Kenneth, Brad and Paul Norwood.

Honorary pallbearers will be Gordon Owen, Jimmy Williams, Neville Barrow and Scott and Kevin Nanney.

Visitation will be 5-8 p.m. today and after noon Saturday.

Born Feb. 23, 1921, in Paris, he was a son of the late Henry Lillard Phelps and Effie Nora Throgmorton Phelps Hastings.

Phelps was a member of First Baptist Church. He was a World War II U.S. Army veteran and received two Purple Hearts. His grandfather, Andrew William Phelps, served in the Civil War. A family member said he enjoyed Tennessee football, duck hunting, fishing, building birdhouses, bird watching and gardening.

Besides his wife, he leaves one daughter: Emily Garthright of Memphis; two grandchildren: Natalie (Brian) Cathey and Carson Phelps (Gwynn) Garthright; one great-grandchild: Gabrielle Cathey; a special niece: Amy Rose; and several other nieces and nephews.

He also was preceded in death by three sisters: Inez Bilino, Lorene Underwood and Mary Evelyn Owen; and a brother: Louie Phelps.

Memorials may be made to the charity of the donor’s choice.
