Twelve members of the Buchanan School class of 1930 gathered at Paris Landing for their
50th year class reunion. Attending were Mary Jenkins Nanney, Dathal Lemonds Lax, Iva Mae
Morgan Allbritten, Myrtle Sykes Gulledge, Lottie Wilson Bucy, Ruth McClure
McCuistion, Obio Ethridge, Esker Williughby, Lewis Neese, Fred Taylor, Fred Williams and
Elvis Clayton.

Beverly Hathaway ('60) was elected president of the Atkins Porter 4-H Club. Other officers
were Katha Howard ('60), Martha Berry ('61), Jane Smith ('61) and Janice Hathaway ('61).
On the eighth grade high honor roll at Atkins-Porter School for the first six weeks were
Peggy Miller, Elizabeth Porter, Kay Vaughn, Jerry Grosser, Richard Dunlap III, Bill
Harding, Ava Waldon, Suzanne Lampkins, Barbara Ledbetter, Tommy McCutcheon, Diane Ross,
Sandra Guinn, Suzanne Looney, Joyce Phelps, Camille Todd and Patricia Wimberly. (Note:
these students would all be in the Grove High School Class of 1960.)
The boys and girls letter clubs at Grove High School combined into one. Eugene
"Oogie" Parish ('56) was elected president and other officers were Becky McClain
('56), Peggy Davis ('57), Pete Perry ('56) and Bill Warren ('57).
Seven students from Paris were among those pledging fraternities at the University of
Tennessee. Included were Ed Tayloe Jr. ('55), Dan Bundy ('55), Robert Dortch ('55),
Sonny Bunn ('53), Charles Franklin ('55), Gene Moore ('53) and James Key ('55) .

Prof. W.J. Smith, principal at Grove High School, spoke to the Lions Club on school
needs. The club voted to provide enough
cars for the team to travel to their next two games, at Trenton and Waverly.

Post-Intelligencer editor and publisher Bill Williams ('52) was named "Man of
the Year" by the Chamber of Commerce. Williams succeeded Bill Caldwell ('43).

Six students from Paris were enrolled at Tennessee Temple School in Chattanooga. Included
were Joy Faye ('53) and Winnie Prince ('54), Jean and Clayton Gaddy ('54) and Lindell

More than 700 girls, students at Grove High School and city schools, were treated by Hal
Laurence, manager of the Capitol Theater, to a free
Clara Bow movie in observance of Girls Day here.

A state high school inspector visited Grove High School and gave it the highest mark
attainable, "Grade A." He said the faculty and quality of work being done by the
students were of the highest quality and ranked with the best high schools in the state.
The only recommendation he made for the school was the construction of a gymnasium.

The Henry chapter of Future Homemakers of America elected officers. President was Janet
Hays and others were Jarutha Smith, Margaret Presson, Margaret Smith, Betty Hamlin, Evelyn
McCoy, Rebecca McCoy and Glenda Lipps.
Bill Hudson ('58) and Don McKinnon ('56) played outstanding defensive game and Grove High
School's football offense rambled at will to
smash the highly regarded Jackson Northside Indians 30-13 for their third straight
victory.

Jane Roberts('56) and Pete Ferry ('56) were elected to represent the Grove High School
Distributive Education Class at a state convention to be
held in Nashville.
Anne Corbett ('54) was one of 32 new students enrolled for the fall quarter for a course
in dental hygiene at the University of Tennessee at Knoxville. She had attended Memphis
State College the previous year.

Puryear beat Cottage Grove 19-16 in county basketball play. The Puryear team, coached by
William McGehee, featured a balanced attack. Team members, all seniors, were center W.C.
Potts, who coach McGehee said was the best center in the country, G.P. Hays, William
Thomas Hays, Wilbur Underwood and J.E. Summers.

The Grove High School Distributive Education Club and guest enjoyed a gathering at Paris
Landing.Guest included Sylvia Crews ('56 ), Becky McClain ('56), Patsy Latimer ('57), Dan
King ('50), Joe Tutor, Kenneth Gray, Bettye Paschall, Edwina Brooks ('57), Denton Evans
('56) and Evonne James ('56). Chaperone was the D.E. Sponsor, Homer Spain.

The sixth period freshman class at Grove High School elected officers. Betsy Bailey
was new president and others were Carol Caldwell, Shirley Hamilton, Patricia Perry, Nancy
Lampkins, Carol Scoby, Sandra Irby and Jane Warmack.
(Note: This would be the Grove Senior Class of 1959.)
Marvin McSwain was honored for 50 years service with the Paris Fire Department and his
75th birthday. "Mr. Marvin" responded to the fire siren by peddling to the fire
department on his bicycle as usual only to find he was being honored.
[webmaster note: In the late 1940's, if you were on the courthouse square when the fire
whistle sounded, looked at McSwain's Drugstore, you would get to see Mr. Marvin run from
his store and jump on the firetruck. Often the truck left with only Mr. Marvin and the
driver on board. The driver was most times the Chief, P. Berry (Paul Berry).]
Richard Farrell, marching band director at Murray State College, said six Henry County
students were band members. They were Tommy Barfield ('55), Bill Mann ('53), Richard Wall
('53), George Luckey ('53), Bill Bigham ('52) and Sidney Boone ('55).

Sellers Leach and his orchestra, The Aristocrats of Music, played for a dance at The New
Pit in Jackson. The band featured Chuck Simons on drums, Phil Forrest on piano, and a
vocal trio of Richard Farrell, Bill Bigham ('52) and Clem Corbo.
The Grove Blue Devils upset highly rated Henderson 12-0 in a downpour of rain. Mickey
Norman ('57) and Earl Wilson ('56) scored touchdowns. Norman tallied from 11 yards out on
a great fake by Oogie Parish ('56) and a springing block by Ronnie McGehee ('56). Wilson
hauled the pigskin 50 yards for another score but later in the game was lost for the
season with a hairline fracture to the spine. Parish had one punt of 58 yards.

Mr. and Mrs. A.H. Townsend announced the engagement of their granddaughter, Sue McNutt
('55), to Ted Prince ('49), son of Mr. and Mrs. F. C.
Prince. She had graduated in the class of 1955 at Grove High School and Prince was a
junior at Murray State College.

Grove, Elkhom, Fowler, Fairview, Morning Shade, Mansfield, Midway, New Bethel, Nelson,
Oakland, Perry, Success, Spring Hill, Sulphur Well Academy, Van Dyke and Young.

Mary Elizabeth Beard ('50) completed dietetic internship at Kennedy Veterans Hospital in
Memphis. She had accepted a post as dietitian
at Jackson-Madison County Hospital. She was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Charley C. Beard
and a recent graduate of the University
of Tennessee.
Judy Carol Hayes, 8-year-old Lee School student, made her second appearance on the
Grand Ole Opry. She was the daughter of Mr.
and Mrs. Homer Hayes of West Blythe Street.
The eighth grade class at Puryear School elected officers. President was Jimmy Gallimore
and others were Jerry McElroy, Lyndell Kent,
Freddie Paschall, Freddie Wade and Lola Farris.
J.D. Burdin ('54), former Grove High School football star, was scheduled to be in the
starting lineup when the Murray State Racers opened their
season at Louisville. Burdin was the only freshman starter the year before at Murray.

Homer Spain, former Grove High School basketball coach, was promoted by Fidelity Life
Insurance Company to regional vice president of the
western region. Spain had retired from coaching in 1962 to become an agent with Fidelity.

Jack McGehee ('31) was elected president of the junior class at Grove High School. Thomas
Gorman ('31) was vice president and other officers

Elizabeth Womack ('31). Charles Wilson, Elsa Ezell
and Gladys Holiday were class sponsors.
Howard and Ben Jobe ('24) of the Howard and Jobe Store had returned from St. Louis, where
they had attended markets buying fall and winter wear.

The Henry High School class of 1960 held a reunion. Attending were class members Bonnie

Flowers Barfield, Joyce Glisson Bowden, James Hicks, Donald Myrick, Ralph Lowe,
Wilma Baker Ziegler, Billy Sutton and Lee Roy Hamlin.

Eagle Hill School near the Henry County line north of Como closed. Not enough pupils were
registered for the fall term to keep the school open. Students would be bussed to Central
School.
In the opening game of the football season against McKenzie, coach Andy Settles' Grove
Blue Devils eked out a 12-6 victory. Eugene "Oogie" Parish scooped up a bad
McKenzie snap and raced 94 yards for a touchdown in the fourth quarter in the game's big
play. Parish led the team in rushing with 76 yards, followed by Ronnie McGehee and Connie
Greer.

Two new bridges over the Cumberland and Tennessee Rivers were dedicated in events attended
by Gov. Henry Horton. Huge crowds of people gathered at Dover and at the mouth of the Big
Sandy River where it empties into the Tennessee for the ceremonies. The Tennessee River
Bridge, named the Scott Fitzhugh, was the longest bridge in Tennessee, measuring 1,173
feet with 19,902 cubic yards of concrete and 3,171,000 pounds of steel in it. It was
predicted the bridges, linking West and Middle Tennessee, would bring a huge increase in
business into the area.
Prof. W. J. Smith, Grove High School principal, announced a near record enrollment for the
new school year. He said the 405 students would push the capacity of the building.

Bennie Akers was elected president of the senior class at Cottage Grove High School. Other
officers were Ted Nance, Mary Harding, Teddy Nichols and Maureen Crowder. J.W. Webb was
sponsor of the 27-member class.

Charles T. Pardue of Grove High School was elected president of a new organization of
vocational agriculture teachers of Henry County schools. H.W. Wallace of Buchanan was
chosen secretary. Others attending were H. Ray Cox of Henry, Aimo Milam of Cottage Grove
and C.W. Martin of Springville.

David Townsend was elected president of the senior class at Henry High School. Other
officers were Donald Willoughby, Linda Taylor, Janet Hays, Billy Walton, Billy Cole and
Helen Gargus.

Responding to a call from Dave Travis, ambitious young colored man, Edwin W. Grove wired
here that he would list his name as a donor to a fund to raise capital for construction of
a new colored high school here. Grove said he would pay the remainder of all costs after a
fund-raising campaign was completed. John Richardson, chairman of the county school board,
said construction would begin as soon as possible at a cost of approximately $5,000.
Boys at Buchanan High School formed a chapter of Future Farmers of Tennessee under
counselor F.W. Wallace. Charter members were Fred Adams, Zulon Clayton, Glen Gamlin, Grady
Hutson, Woodrow Kemp, John Lemonds, Lloyd Payne, Trellis Seaford, Prentice Sykes, Chester
Thomas and Wilber Thomas.

When school started for the fall term, one young Paris boy observed it as a special day.
It was the first time young Ray Hill, son of Mr. and Mrs. Hubert Hill of Irvine Street,
had been in school since contacting rheumatic fever a year and a half earlier. During that
time he had kept up with his studies with tutoring by Mrs. William Crosswy. He would be in
the eighth grade.

The Grove football boys were in full practice preparing for the upcoming season (1930).
The backfield lineup would likely include Jimmie Mansfield at quarterback. Sad Sam Jones
at fullback and Woody Timmons and Footy Wyatt at halfbacks.

class reunion. They were Agnes Sparks Lovelace, Mary Sue Ragland Nelson, Ora Mae Smith
Brown, Mary Cannon, Robert H. Arnett, Roy Wynns, Annie Warren Looney Mills and Nettie Ross
Veazey.

('56), Dan Clark, Danny Wilkins ('56), Don McKinnon ('56), Dara Childs ('57),
Ronnie Guthrie ('58) and Miller Kennon ('57).

string of 50 striped and largemouth bass they caught trolling with airplane spinners.

Excavation work was complete and framing had begun on the new high school at Henry. It
would be available for occupancy by mid-Winter. Materials had been shipped for two new
grammar schools, one at Como and one at Hico.
